Sitting on One Side

Vijnana Bhairava 78

Meaning · English

On a soft seat, resting on a single buttock, with hands and feet left without support, set yourself so. Through close absorption in that, the mind becomes supreme and full.

Three words carry it. Nirashraya is made of 'without' and 'support', the thing you lean on or take shelter in. Here it is applied to the hands and feet, which rest on nothing. Prasanga is close attachment, being joined to something so fully that you stay with it. Mati is the mind taken as awareness, the knowing itself and not its thoughts. Now the clauses in order. The seat is soft, so nothing hard pushes back. The weight rests on one buttock only, so the body is not evenly propped. The hands and feet are set down without anything holding them up. Then comes the absorption: you stay joined to that lopsided, unsupported sitting. The result is a mind called supreme and full. The text's logic is that an ordinary act, sitting down, is opened from inside. A body that leans on nothing leaves the mind nothing to lean on either. Attention that usually runs to objects collects in the one place where the body is holding itself, and the mind is left whole.

1. Sit on something soft, a folded blanket or a cushion that gives. 2. Let your weight rest on one buttock only. Let the other side lighten. 3. Set your hands and feet down so they hold nothing up. Let them hang or rest loosely and stay free of the floor and the seat. 4. Stay with this lopsided, unsupported sitting. Your attention is on the point where your weight rests. 5. When your mind runs off, or your free leg grips, come back to that point and loosen the grip. 6. Stop when you start to tip into strain or sleep.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it has supports, and the body's supports are the nearest ones. Take them away and the mind's movement settles. With no support left, awareness is not carried off to an object and stays knowing itself. That is the text's teaching. What a sitter tends to notice: the soft seat sinks, the weight settles on one hip, and the body wobbles a little. The muscles at the side of that hip work, the trunk makes small corrections, and the spine stays long without being held stiff. The breath is not mentioned, so it is left alone. At first attention keeps jumping to the hands and feet, to the discomfort, to the fear of tipping. A small sign it is working is that thoughts thin out because the balancing takes up the attention. Common ways it goes wrong: the free leg grips the floor, a hand braces on the seat, the body slumps into sleep on the soft cushion, or the sit turns into a contest of endurance.
