Five Named Ways of Looking

Vijnana Bhairava 77

Meaning · English

In the rattling, the angry, the Bhairavi, the licking and the sky-moving ways of looking, at the very time of seeing, the highest attainment shines out.

The verse names five ways of looking and says what they share: at the time of seeing, the highest is revealed. Take the key words one at a time. Krodhana comes from krodha, anger, so it is a fierce, intense look. Lelihana comes from the root for licking, a look that takes in its object hungrily, as if tasting it. Khecari joins kha, sky or space, with the root for moving, so it is a look that moves in open space. Bhairavi means she who belongs to Bhairava, the look of the goddess herself. Karankini is named but not explained in the words given. The text lists the five and does not describe how each is done. Every clause comes down to one point: the moment of seeing, drishti-kale, is where the matter turns. Nothing has to be added to that moment. By the text's own logic, seeing is the most ordinary act there is, and it happens whether or not anyone is watching it. When the look is made fierce, hungry or wide, attention gathers in the act of seeing rather than in the thing seen. The ordinary moment opens from inside, and what shines in it was there before the five names.

1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with your eyes open and the face soft. 2. Rest your look on something ordinary in front of you, a wall, a cup, a window. 3. Attend to the act of seeing, not to what is seen. Let the look be steady, fierce or wide, whichever comes naturally. 4. When you start naming the thing or following a thought, come back to the moment of seeing. 5. If the eyes tighten or ache, soften the look and continue. 6. Stop when the time you set is up, and let your eyes move freely.

The tradition's account: the mind normally moves outward, from the eye to the object and on to the next thought. When the look itself becomes the whole of attention, that movement stops. The object is no longer a support, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this the highest attainment showing itself, not being made. What a sitter tends to notice: the eyes want to strain, so the brow tightens and the jaw sets. Relaxing the face while keeping the look alive is the first difficulty. Attention slips from the act of seeing to the thing seen, then to naming it. A small sign it is working is a short stretch where looking continues with no commentary on it. Another is a sense of the look spreading wide instead of pointing. The usual mistakes are staring until the eyes ache, treating the five names as poses to perform, and waiting for something special instead of staying with plain seeing.
