Awake at Sleep's Edge

Meaning · English
When sleep has not yet come and the outer world has fallen away, that state can be reached by the mind. There the supreme goddess shines.
Four words carry it. Nidra is sleep. Bahya is outer. Gochara literally means a cow's pasture, the ground where cattle roam, so for the senses it is the range of sights, sounds and touches they graze on. Avastha is a state, a standing in place. Now each clause. Sleep has not come yet. The pasture of the senses has gone. That state can be reached by the mind, so the mind is still present, awake enough to arrive. Then the supreme goddess shines. Devi comes from a root meaning to shine, so the goddess and the shining are not two things. This works as a doorway because every night you pass through this gap and miss it. The senses go quiet, and the mind usually goes with them into sleep. Bhairava's answer is that nothing has to be added. The ordinary moment of falling asleep, opened from inside by staying awake in it, is already the way in. The text asks for no special object. The withdrawal of the world is enough.
1. Lie down at night when you are tired, on your back or side, and let the bed take your weight. 2. Close your eyes. Let the day's sights and sounds fall back without pushing them away. 3. Stay awake, and watch the place where sleep has not yet come and the world is thinning. 4. When the mind drifts into a story or a dream, notice it and return to being awake in that gap. 5. If sleep takes you, let it. Stop there.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because objects pull it. When the outer range is gone, the pulling stops, and the support the mind leaned on drops away. What is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls the goddess shining. The verse names no breath, so none is added here. What a sitter tends to notice: lying down, the body gets heavy, the jaw and the muscles around the eyes loosen, and the weight goes into the bed. The first difficulty is that thought keeps going and replays the day. Sounds do not vanish but matter less. Small signs of it working are half-formed images, broken sentences, and a loosening in the head. Then a brief gap may show, awake with nothing to be awake about. The usual ways it goes wrong are two. Sleep takes over unnoticed. Or effort tightens the forehead and holds the edge away. Watching for the edge from outside, like a spectator, also keeps it out of reach.
