Everything as Awareness
Vijnana Bhairava 63
Meaning · English
Hold the whole body as made of awareness, or the whole world the same. With a mind that does not split things into this and that, and takes all in at once, the highest rising comes.
Three terms carry the verse. Cinmaya means made of awareness: cit is the knowing itself, maya here means consisting of. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mind's habit of cutting experience into separate pieces and naming them. Yugapat means at the same moment, not one thing after another. Paramodaya is the highest rising, a full dawning. Now the clauses. You take the entire body, not a part, as consisting of awareness. Or you take the world that way. Either object will do. The mind doing this must not divide: no sorting into body here, room there, me and other. And it must hold everything together in one moment, not walk through it piece by piece. Then the highest rising. The logic is the text's own: the body and the world are already in front of you in every ordinary moment. Nothing new is brought in. The moment is opened from inside by seeing that what shows up is awareness, and by dropping the splitting that hides it. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not printed with the verse.
1. Sit or lie where you will not be disturbed, eyes open softly or closed. 2. Take in your whole body at once, not part by part. Think of it as made of awareness. 3. If that is hard, widen to the room and the world beyond, and think of all of it the same way. 4. Do not name or sort. Let this and that be one. 5. When the mind starts scanning piece by piece, drop the piece and take the whole again. 6. Stop when you tire of holding it, or at the end of your time.
The tradition's account: the mind's constant movement is the sorting of things into separate objects. When the mind takes body or world whole, in one moment and without division, that movement has nothing to grip. The support of separateness falls away, and awareness is left knowing itself as the stuff of what appears. The text calls this the highest rising. What a sitter tends to notice is more modest. First, the mind keeps scanning: foot, then chest, then the sound of a door. That is the piece-by-piece habit, and it is the first difficulty. Second, the instruction gets turned into a mental picture of awareness, which is one more object. Small signs it is working: edges of the body feel less sharp, the room and the body seem to sit in one field, thinking slows because there is nothing to compare. Usual failures are straining to hold the whole, or going dull and calling it stillness. Wide, easy, and awake is the mark of it.
