Full and Faint Power
Vijnana Bhairava 55
Meaning · English
Meditate on the power that is both full and faint in the range of the twelve. Enter the heart and keep meditating there. Released, you arrive at your own freedom.
Shakti is power, the force behind any movement or act of knowing. Pina means swollen or full. Durbala means without strength. The verse puts both words on the same power, so the one power is seen at its fullest and at its faintest. Dvadasha-gochara is the range or pasture of the twelve. The text names the field and gives no measurements, so you hold the word as written. Svatantrya is rule by one's own self, freedom that depends on nothing else. The clauses run in order. First you meditate on the power as full and faint within that range. Then you enter the heart. Then you keep meditating there, and the meditating itself is what remains. Released, you come to your own freedom. The doorway is an ordinary one. Every impulse, thought and breath swells and thins, and you have watched this all your life without stopping on it. Bhairava's answer is that the moment needs no replacing. Open it from inside, follow the power from fullness to faintness, and the attention goes inward to the heart. That is where the verse leaves you, free.
1. Sit upright and let your shoulders drop. Close your eyes or leave them half open. 2. Notice one movement of power in you, such as an impulse, a thought or a breath. Watch it swell and then go faint. 3. Keep attending to the full and the faint together, without choosing between them. 4. Let your attention go in toward the heart and stay there, still meditating. 5. When the mind wanders, notice it and come back to the swelling and fading. 6. Stop when the sit has run its time, and open your eyes slowly.
In the tradition's account, the mind's movement is a power that swells and fails. When attention rests on that swelling and failing, the mind stops chasing what it moves toward. The support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. This is called freedom. A sitter usually finds the first difficulty is that attention wants an object and keeps reaching for a picture of the power. Staying with the plain rise and fade of whatever is happening is harder than it sounds. Thoughts take over, and the sit becomes a story about the heart. Small signs of it working are quieter. The fullness and the faintness start to feel like one thing. Attention settles lower and inward without effort, and the urge to check how it is going loosens. It goes wrong in two usual ways. One is forcing a feeling in the chest. The other is going dull and calling that rest. Sitting upright, with the shoulders loose, helps with both.
