Beware Flowery Words

Bhagavad Gita 2.42

Meaning · English

Those of limited understanding speak flowery words. Attached to the flowery words of the Vedas, they advocate that there is nothing else, Arjun, son of Pritha.

Three words carry the verse. Puspita means flowery, in bloom. Vac is speech, words. Avipascit is made of a, not, and vipascit, one who sees clearly, so it means someone of limited understanding. Krishna tells Arjuna that some people speak in blossoming, ornate language. They are attached to the showy parts of the Vedas, and they insist there is nothing beyond them. The word vadin, one who advocates, shows they argue the point firmly. Krishna names them by their limited understanding, not by any wickedness. The reason comes from the verses just before: he has been asking for one resolute intellect, and these speakers pull minds into many branches. A flower is pleasing to see, but it is not the fruit. Ornate promises hold the attention, and the person stops looking further. Krishna asks Arjuna to notice when handsome speech is passing itself off as the whole truth. He is not rejecting the Vedas here; his target is the attachment and the claim that nothing else exists. Shankara reads the speakers as people fixed on ritual portions, who miss the knowledge of the self. Ramanuja says the fault lies in treating the ritual results as the final aim. Madhva takes the flowery words to be praise of rewards that hides the highest aim. Each of the three finds the problem in the narrowing, not in the scripture itself.

A shop window at festival time is hung with lights and bright cloth, and a crowd stands admiring it, never stepping inside to see what is actually sold. The glittering display is the flowery speech. The goods inside, plain and useful, are what Krishna wants Arjuna to go and look for.

1. Today, when someone speaks to you with great polish, such as an advertisement, a speech or a confident relative, pause for ten seconds. 2. Ask silently: what exactly is being offered, and what is it asking of me? 3. Say it back to yourself in two plain sentences, with the decoration removed. 4. Notice whether the plain version still draws you as much as the ornate one did.

A woman sits in a hall at a weekend seminar. The speaker is warm and sure of himself, and he promises that one method will settle her money worries, her marriage and her health. Around her people are nodding, and she feels the pull to sign up for the next course. The verse changes the moment in small steps. She hears the sound of the promise as separate from its content. She asks what is actually being said, and whether he claims there is nothing else worth trying. Then she waits a day before paying, and she speaks to someone who knows her life. The text teaches that the mark of the flowery speaker is the claim that nothing else exists. Ordinary experience agrees that confident, polished speech feels more true than it is, and that a crowd's nodding makes doubt harder. The verse does not promise she will always tell sincere teaching from empty show, and it does not remove her real worries about money or health. For those, she still needs honest advice and, where it applies, a doctor or a counsellor.
