The story · English
The autumn air was fresh, and the waters were clear and scented by the fragrance of lotuses. Into this serene world came Achyuta with the cows and the cowherd boys. With Balarama at his side, he entered the forests of Vrindavana, grazing the herds of cattle. Amidst the blossoming trees, where bees hummed and birds sang in the branches, Krishna raised his flute to his lips. As he played, the melody drifted through the woods, a sound so sweet and enchanting that it seemed to capture the very essence of love and longing, echoing through the greenery of the valley.
The women of Vraja, hearing the notes of the flute, were overcome with emotion. Some of them began, in private, to describe Krishna's beauty to their friends, but remembering his deeds, their minds shaken by love, they could not go on. They recalled how he looked like a master actor, wearing a peacock-feather crown and golden earrings made of Karnikara flowers, with his golden silk garments and the Vaijayanti garland draped across his chest. As he entered Vrindavana, made lovely by his footprints, his lips filled the holes of the flute with a nectar-like sweetness while the cowherd boys sang his glories, and the Gopis were left completely absorbed in his memory.
The Gopis said the highest reward of having eyes was to see the faces of the two brothers, graced by the flute and casting loving glances, as they led the cows into the woods with their friends. They imagined Krishna and Balarama appearing like two great actors on a stage, adorned with garlands of Utpala and lotus flowers, their clothes vibrant and strange. 'What merit did this flute earn,' they wondered, 'that it drinks by itself the nectar of Damodara's lips, which belongs to us?' The rivers thrilled and the trees shed tears like rejoicing elders, for the flute was born of their family. They spoke of the glory that the lotus feet of the son of Devaki brought to the land of Vrindavana, and how the peacocks danced in a frenzy at the sound.
The Gopis told how the magic of the music reached beyond the village. Even the deer, though simple-minded, came with their black-buck mates, drawn to the one in the strange attire, and worshipped Krishna with loving glances. Celestial women travelling in their flying chariots, seeing Krishna and hearing the clear song of his flute, were so stunned that they forgot themselves; the flowers fell from their braids and their belts loosened. The cows drank the nectar of the music through their ears, and the calves stood frozen, milk dripping from their mouths, staring at Govinda with tearful, longing eyes.
The Gopis said the forest itself responded. Birds perched on the tender red branches of the trees, closing their eyes in silent ecstasy. The rivers, captivated by the song of Mukunda, seemed to swirl and embrace the feet of Murari. The Pulinda women of the forest found on the grass the kunkuma that Krishna's lotus feet had carried from his beloveds' breasts; smearing it on their faces and breasts, they eased their longing. The hill Govardhana, best of Hari's servants, rejoiced at the touch of the feet of Rama and Krishna and honoured them, their cows and the cowherds with water, grass, caves, fruits and roots. As the music continued to drift through the woods, the women of Vraja remained lost in the wonder of his play.
