The story · English
In the first month of winter, the young girls of Nanda's village began a solemn vow. They ate only simple havishya food and rose early every morning to walk together, arm in arm, singing loudly of Krishna. Upon reaching the banks of the river Kalindi, they would leave their clothes on the shore and plunge into the cold waters with joy. Once finished, they would build a likeness of the goddess Katyayani on the sandy bank and worship her with fragrant garlands, incense, lamps, and offerings of rice and sprouts. With deep devotion, they chanted a mantra, praying to the great Maya and the supreme Yogini: 'O Goddess, please make the son of Nanda, Krishna, my husband.'
One morning, Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, arrived at the river accompanied by his young friends. Watching the girls from a distance, he quietly gathered their discarded clothes and climbed a Neepa tree. From the branches, he called out to them with a mischievous laugh, 'Come here, you girls! Come and take your clothes. I speak the truth and am not joking, for your vow has worn you thin. I have never told a lie, as my friends know. Come one by one, or all together.' The girls, though embarrassed and shivering in the icy water, could not help but smile at his playfulness. They stayed in the river, trembling from the cold, but their hearts were full of love for the boy.
The girls called out to him, 'Do not be unfair to us! O dear son of Nanda, we know you are the pride of Vraja. Please, give us back our clothes!' they pleaded, shivering violently. They offered to be his servants if he would only return their garments, warning him that they might otherwise tell the king. Krishna replied with a smile, 'If you are truly willing to serve me and do as I say, then come here and take your clothes.' The girls, exhausted by the cold and trying to cover themselves with their hands, stepped out of the water. Krishna, seeing their pure hearts, placed the clothes on his shoulder and spoke with a gentle grin.
He told them that bathing naked during their vow had offended the god of the waters; they should join their palms above their heads and bow to remove the sin, then take their garments. Believing their vow broken, the girls bowed to him to make amends. Pleased by their humility, Krishna returned their clothes. Though he had tricked, shamed, mocked and toyed with them, they felt no resentment, content in his company. Dressed, they lingered shyly. Krishna told them that he knew and approved their resolve to worship him, and it would come true, for desire fixed on him breeds no worldly desire, as roasted grain does not sprout. They would enjoy the coming nights with him. Wish granted, they returned reluctantly to Vraja, meditating on his lotus feet.
Later, Krishna and Balarāma took the cows far from Vrindavana. As the harsh sun beat down, Krishna looked at the trees shading him like parasols and said to his friends, 'Look at these great souls who live entirely for others. They endure wind, rain, heat, and cold just to provide shelter and fruit to others. This is the true success of a human life—to act for the benefit of others.' After this, they led the cows to the banks of the Yamuna, where the animals drank the cool, auspicious water, and the cowherd boys themselves drank their fill. Then, grazing the cows in a grove by the river, the boys grew hungry and came to Krishna and Balarāma to speak to them.
