The story · English
The cowherds were hungry, and their hunger was becoming an annoyance. They turned to Krishna, and the son of Devaki, wishing to favor the wives of the local Brahmins, gave them a plan. He told his companions to go to a specific sacrifice called the Angirasa satram, which the Brahmins were performing to gain entrance to heaven. Krishna instructed the cowherds to approach the priests and ask for cooked rice, making sure to mention both Krishna's and Rama's names. The cowherds obeyed him exactly. They went to the priests and fell prostrate on the ground, bowing with joined palms. They told the priests, 'We are the messengers of Krishna. Please be kind to us; Rama and Acyuta are hungry and waiting for us to bring back rice.'
The priests, however, were blinded by pride and small-mindedness. Though they heard the request, they ignored the divine nature of the one who sent the messengers. Seeing him with a human eye, they took the Supreme Lord, the Adhokshaja, for a mere mortal. They said neither 'yes' nor 'no'. The cowherds gave up hope and returned to Krishna and Rama, empty-handed. Krishna, the Lord of the Universe, only laughed. He decided to show them a different way to get their meal. He told the cowherds, 'Go to the wives of the Brahmins. Mention that I have come with Balarāma. Those women, who are filled with love and devotion, will give you as much food as you desire.'
The cowherds went to the women's quarters and found the wives adorned in their finery. They bowed and said, 'We have been sent by Krishna, who is grazing the cows nearby. He and his companion are hungry; please give us food for them.' Upon hearing Acyuta's name, the women were overcome with excitement and a desperate longing to see him. They completely forgot their surroundings. They gathered a vast amount of food of four kinds in vessels and rushed toward the forest like rivers flowing into the ocean. They ignored the protests of their husbands, brothers, and sons, driven by a deep, unwavering resolve to reach the Lord.
In the Yamuna's gardens, under Ashoka trees with fresh new leaves, the women found Krishna among the cowherds and his elder brother. He was dark, in a golden-yellow garment, with a forest garland, peacock feathers, and a dancer's dress of mineral colours and fresh sprouts. One hand rested on a friend's shoulder, the other twirled a lotus; lotus earrings and curls framed his smiling lotus face. Mesmerized, the women cast aside all worldly desires and surrendered themselves to him. Krishna laughed and welcomed them: it was fitting they had come to see him; what could he do for them? Devotion to him, the dearest of all, was the self's true interest, he said; now they must go back, for their husbands needed them to finish the sacrifice. The wives pleaded that they had defied all their kin; their husbands, parents, sons and brothers would not take them back, and with no other refuge they fell at his feet.
Krishna comforted them, promising that their families would not resent them and that the gods themselves approved of their love. He told them that physical proximity is not what creates true affection, but focusing the mind on him. The women returned to the sacrifice, and their husbands continued the ritual without jealousy. One wife's husband had stopped her from going; embracing Krishna in her heart as she had heard of him, she gave up her body, bound by karma. Krishna used the food brought by the women to feed the cowherds and himself. Later, the Brahmins realized their mistake and lamented their arrogance, cursing their own learning and caste for having rejected the Lord of the Universe while the 'simple' women had found him. They called themselves fortunate to have such wives, and they longed to see Krishna and Balarama, but for fear of Kamsa they did not go.
