The story · English

Krishna was with Balarāma when he noticed the cowherds of Vraja preparing for a great sacrifice. Though he knew everything that was happening in the universe, Krishna approached the elders, led by Nanda, with a humble air. He asked them, "Father, why is there such a commotion? What is the purpose of this sacrifice, to whom is it offered, and by what means is it performed? Please tell me everything, for the good deeds of saintly people should not be kept secret."

Nanda explained that Indra was the Lord of Rain and that the clouds were his own forms, pouring water to sustain all living beings. He told Krishna that it was their tradition to honor Indra with sacrifices and wealth to ensure their survival. Nanda warned that anyone who abandoned this ancestral duty out of greed, fear, or hatred would meet with misfortune. Having heard this, Krishna addressed his father in words meant to rouse Indra's anger.

"Father," Krishna said, "beings are born and die because of their own actions. Even if there is a God who grants results, he too depends on the doer and is no master over one who does not act. What can Indra do for beings who simply follow their own karma? People act according to their own nature—humans, demons, and gods alike. Our true duty is to honor the work that sustains us. A priest should live by study, a warrior by protection, a merchant by trade, and a laborer by service. As cowherds, our life is centered on our cows."

Krishna continued, "The world is created and driven by the quality of passion, and it is passion that moves the clouds to rain, not Indra. We are forest dwellers with no fixed villages or houses. Therefore, let us instead perform a sacrifice for the cows, the Brahmanas, and the Govardhana hill. Let there be various preparations of food, including sūpa and pāyasa. Let the Brahmanas perform the rituals and be given plenty of food and cows as gifts. Let food be given to all others too, down to dogs, chandalas and outcastes, as is fitting; let grass be given to the cows, and an offering to the mountain."

Following Krishna's advice, Nanda and the people of Vraja organized the feast and offered gifts to the mountain and the priests. As they walked around Govardhana hill in procession, singing and dressed in fine clothes, Krishna took a second, huge form to win the cowherds' trust. Declaring, "I am the mountain," he ate the abundant offerings. Then Krishna himself bowed with the people of Vraja to that form, his own self, saying, "Look, the mountain has taken form and blessed us! He slays forest-dwellers who scorn him, so let us bow to him for our welfare and our cows'." Having completed the sacrifice, Krishna and the cowherds returned home to Vraja.
