The Self-born one cut the senses to open outward, so a person looks at what is outside and not at the inner self. Only a rare steady one, wanting deathlessness, turned his eyes away from the world and saw the Self within.

Yama answers Nachiketas with a reason for why people miss the Self. Three words carry it. Khani are the openings of the body: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin. Their root sense is a hollow, a gap cut through. Paranchi means turned outward, facing away. Dhira is a steady, wise person, one whose mind does not shake. Pratyagatman is the Self that stands behind, the inner witness, the atman, which the Upanishads treat as the real one in each being. Yama says the Self-born creator made the senses open outward. So a person naturally sees colours, hears sounds, reaches for things, and does not look at the one who sees. He says only a rare steady person, wanting immortality, turns the gaze around, with eyes drawn back from objects, and sees the Self within. The reason is a problem, not a blame: the senses do their work well, and that work faces outward. The listener is asked to notice this default, and to admit that wanting deathlessness is what turns the head. Shankara reads the turning back as withdrawal of the senses from objects, so that the Self, the same as Brahman, the ground of all things, is known as one's own inner being.

A person sits in a lit room at night, looking out through the window at the street. All they see is the street. They never see the lamp behind them that makes the seeing possible. Turning from the glass to the lamp is the turning the verse describes: attention leaves the view and faces its source.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with the lights low and your phone out of reach. 2. Let your eyes close. Notice how quickly attention runs outward to sounds, to tomorrow, to a conversation. 3. Each time it runs, do not follow it. Ask quietly, "Who is aware of this?" and stay with that question for a breath. 4. Do this on three evenings this week. Note only whether the outward pull feels weaker or the same.

A mother is on the platform at a railway station, watching the clock and the crowd for her son's train. Her eyes dart from face to face. She has not noticed her own shaking hands, or that she has been holding her breath for a minute. Yama's teaching speaks to this moment. Attention is flowing outward, as the senses were made to carry it, and nothing in her is looking at the one who waits. Step by step: she feels her feet on the ground, lets her breath go out, and notices that she is the one watching, afraid and hoping together. That noticing does not change the train. It gives her a place to stand while the crowd moves. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind absorbed in outside events loses track of its own state, and that a pause often shows it. The limit is plain. Turning inward does not bring the train sooner, does not remove her fear, and is not a substitute for help if she is unwell. The text's larger claim, that the inner witness is the Self and leads to deathlessness, is its own teaching, offered as the aim of a lifetime and not as a result of one evening.
