The Smallest Self
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.9
Meaning · English
Split a hair's tip a hundred ways, then one piece a hundred more. Know the living self as that sliver; yet it is fit for the infinite.
The jīva is the living self, the one in each body who acts and experiences. Its size is given as a hair's tip cut into a hundred parts, with one part cut a hundred times again. That is one ten-thousandth of something already almost invisible. The point is that no measure can catch it. It has to be understood, not seen. Then the line turns. This same speck is fit for endlessness. Tiny and boundless are both said of one self.
Prick a hole in a card with a needle and hold it up to the sun. On the ground below, a full round image of the sun appears. The opening is barely a speck, yet what passes through it bears no relation to its size. The self is that speck; what it opens onto has no limit.
