Neither Woman Nor Man

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.10

Meaning · English

It is not a woman, and not a man, nor is it sexless. Whatever body it takes up, it becomes joined to that very body.

The tiny living self described just before has no sex of its own. It is not female. It is not male. It is not some third kind that is neither. Those are facts about bodies. When the self takes up a body, it becomes joined to that body and is spoken of in that body's terms. The doubled word in the second line stresses each body in turn: this one, then the next. The bodies change. The self joined to them does not.

A hand slides into a gardening glove, then a leather driving glove, then a thick woollen mitten. Each time it takes the glove's shape, and anyone looking sees only the glove. The hand underneath has no stitching, no leather, no wool. The self is the hand; male, female and every other body-label belong to the glove.
