Bodies Shaped by Deeds
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.11
Meaning · English
Through wanting, touching, seeing and confusion, through food, drink and rain, a body is born and grows. Following its deeds, the embodied one takes form after form, place after place.
Two things build a body. First, the mind's pull: wanting something, touching it, seeing it, and the confusion that comes with them. Second, plain physical supply: food, water, and the rain that grows the food. Together they bring a body into being and make it grow. The one living inside does not stop at one body. It moves on in sequence, and the forms it takes and the places it lands in follow the actions it has already done.
A hermit crab outgrows its shell and crawls into another, then another. The crab stays the same animal; only the shell changes, and each new shell fits what the crab has become. The embodied one moves the same way, and what it has done decides the shape of its next home.
