Freed From Every Bond
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.13
Meaning · English
No start, no finish, at the center of the tangle: the world's maker in countless shapes, the one who encircles all. Whoever knows this god is freed from every bond.
The tangle is the muddy, churning world of birth and bodies. God is not standing outside it but in its middle. Yet, unlike a body, god has no start and no end. This one being makes the world, takes on its many shapes, and also surrounds the whole of it from outside. The bonds are whatever ties a person to that churn. The way out is stated plainly: knowing this god loosens every one of them.
Drop a sponge into a sink full of water. The water fills every hole in the sponge, and the same water also sits all around it, holding it from outside. Nothing in the sponge is out of its reach. That is the double place given to god here: inside the thick of the world, and wrapped around the whole of it.
