The Kindly One Without Home

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.14

Meaning · English

Grasped by the heart, called nestless, maker of being and non-being, the kindly God who makes creation and its parts: those who know him lay the body down.

This God is not picked up the way a thing is picked up. He is grasped by the heart, by a steady inner turning toward him. He is called nestless: he has no body to live in, no perch of his own. He makes both what is and what is not, so arising and vanishing are both his doing. He is Shiva, the kindly one. He sends out creation together with its parts. Those who know him let the body go and are no longer held by it.

Picture a child in a yard blowing soap bubbles. Dozens float off, each shimmering with its own colors, and each pops a moment later. The child makes both the bubble and its bursting, yet lives inside none of them. The maker is like that: the world and its parts come and go by his hand, and he stays outside every one.
