Who Turns the Wheel

Meaning · English
Some wise poets say things simply follow their own nature; others, misled, say time. But it is God's own power in the world that spins this wheel of all things.
The question is what keeps the world moving. Two answers were common among thinkers. One says each thing acts from its built-in nature: fire burns because it is fire. The other says time does it, ripening and wearing everything down. The seer calls both answers confused. Nature and time are real, but neither explains itself. What turns the whole round of birth, growth, death and return is the power of a living God at work inside the world. Nature is what that power looks like up close.
Picture a ceiling fan turning overhead. Someone might say it spins because its blades are shaped that way. Someone else might say it spins because the minutes keep passing. Both miss the current running through the wire. The blade shape is nature, the passing minutes are time, and the current is God's power moving everything.
