The Maker of Time
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.2
Meaning · English
He wraps this whole world always: the knower, maker of time, holder of the qualities, knower of all. Ruled by him, the work turns as earth, water, fire, air and space.
What causes everything is not a blind force. It is someone aware, and he surrounds the world at every moment. He sets time going instead of being carried along by it. He holds the qualities, the strands of nature that make things heavy, restless or clear. Nothing lies outside his knowing. The world is his work, and it keeps turning because he directs it. Earth, water, fire, air and space are that same work in the five forms we can see and touch.
Picture a kitchen with one cook. Pots simmer, the oven hums, a timer ticks. None of it started on its own. The cook set the timer, knows what is in every pot, and turns each flame up or down. The five pots are earth, water, fire, air and space, and the cook is the one who knows and rules them.
