Building, Then Stepping Back
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.3
Meaning · English
He does that work, then draws back, joining principle to principle: by one, two, three or eight, by time, and by the subtle traits of the self.
'That work' is the one just described, the turning of earth, water, fire, air and space under God's rule. He carries it out, then pulls back from it and stands apart. The world is built by fitting one tattva, a basic element of reality, to another. The count runs one, two, three and eight, with nothing named, and two more ingredients are added: time, and the fine qualities that belong to a living self. Later commentators supply the lists; the text itself leaves them as bare numbers.
A watchmaker fits a spring to a wheel, a wheel to a pinion, a pinion to the hands. Then she winds it, closes the case and lifts her hands away. The watch keeps ticking on the bench. So God joins element to element, sets it running, then stands back, though every motion traces to him.
