Outlasting His Own Work
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.4
Meaning · English
One who starts actions woven with the gunas and assigns all states of being: when these are gone, past work perishes; with work spent, he goes on, truly other.
The gunas are the three strands of nature: clarity, restlessness and dullness. Every action runs on them. Work starts inside those strands, and someone stands behind it, setting each state of being where it belongs. Take the gunas away and the store of past deeds has nothing left to cling to, so it falls apart. Karma, the chain of action and result, runs out. The one who set it moving does not run out with it. He carries on, and the text names what he is: in truth, other than the work.
A potter throws clay on a spinning wheel and shapes it with wet hands. When the clay is used up, the wheel slows and stops, and the potter is still sitting there, unchanged. The clay and the spinning are the gunas and the work. The potter belongs to neither, and the stopping does not touch him.
