Beyond Time, Within the Mind

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.5

Meaning · English

He is the beginning, the reason things join together. Beyond past, present and future, seen without parts. Worship first that God of every form, who lives in your own mind.

The source of everything is named first as the one who makes things combine, the way elements come together into bodies. He stands outside time, with no yesterday or tomorrow, and he has no parts, so nothing in him can wear apart. He shows up in every form, all that comes to be starts from him, and he is worthy of praise. Yet he is found close by, seated in a person's own mind. Worship of him there comes first.

A song plays from a thousand radios across a city, each speaker a different shape and size. Yet you can hum the whole tune with no radio at all, from your own memory. That tune is the God here: present in every form, broken by none of them, and nearest inside your own mind.
