Apart From the World-Tree

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.6

Meaning · English

Past the world-tree, time and shape, he sets this spread of things turning. Bearer of right, dispeller of wrong, master of fortune: found in oneself, deathless, home of all.

The world is pictured as a tree: it sprouts, branches, sheds and grows again. Time drives that growth, and shapes are what it produces. The one being described stands higher than all three and is not made of them, yet the whole spread of things turns because of him. He upholds dharma, what is right and holds together; he pushes wrongdoing away; he governs good fortune. And he is not far off: he sits inside a person, deathless, the place where everything lives.

A Ferris wheel: cars climb, crest and come down, riders get on and off. The axle at the hub goes nowhere. It is not one of the cars, yet every turn happens around it, and it sits at the centre. The world is the wheel; the one described is that hub, apart from the ride and at its heart.
