Highest Over Every Ruler
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.7
Meaning · English
We would know him: great Lord over all lords, highest god among gods, master of masters, beyond the highest. He is the shining one, ruler of worlds, worthy of praise.
The seer lines up three kinds of power and sets one being above each. Over every ruler stands the great ruler. Over every god stands the god of the gods. Over every master or protector stands their master. Then he adds 'beyond the highest', so this one cannot be ranked against anything at all. The word for god here means a shining one. The closing wish is to know him, the ruler of the worlds who deserves praise. The verb is know, not fear or obey.
Picture an organization chart pinned to an office wall. Clerks answer to managers, managers to directors, and directors to one name in the top box. The verse takes every such chart, of kings, of gods, of protectors, and says the same one sits above each top box, and above the edge of the paper as well.
