What Holds the Earth Up

Atharva Veda 12.1.1

Meaning · English

Truth, vast and mighty order, consecration, austerity, prayer and sacrifice hold up the Earth. May she, mistress of what has been and what will be, make wide room for us.

In the common count, eight things carry the Earth: truth; greatness; rta, the order that keeps seasons and rites in step; might; consecration, the vow that sets a person apart for holy work; austerity, the heat of discipline; prayer, the sacred word; and sacrifice, the offering given back. Some readers instead take 'vast' and 'mighty' as words describing truth or order, which leaves six. Then a request. The Earth keeps what has been and what will be, as a wife keeps a household, and she is asked for wide room for her people.

Picture a large tent at a village fair. It stands because many ropes are pulled taut from every side; let one go slack and the canvas sags. Inside, there is room for a whole gathering. Truth, order, vow, discipline, prayer and offering are those ropes, and the wide space beneath is what the Earth is asked to give.
