Meaning · English
All-bearing, keeper of treasure, firm ground, golden-breasted, home of every moving thing: may Earth, carrying the fire Vaishvanara, with Indra as her bull, set us in wealth.
The seer names Earth by what she does. She bears everything. She keeps treasure. She is the ground that does not give way. Her breast is golden, which readers take either as gold hidden in her depths or as fields gone yellow at harvest. Every living, moving thing finds a place to settle on her. She carries Agni, the fire, here called Vaishvanara, the fire that belongs to all people. Indra, the rain-bringer, is her bull and mate. The prayer asks this mother to set her children among good things.
Picture a farmhouse kitchen at dusk. The floor is solid underfoot, grain sits stored in bins along the wall, the hearth is lit, and children come in from outside to eat. One house gives the ground, the store and the fire together. The Earth of this hymn is that house for everything alive.
