Meaning · English
Your hills, your snowy mountains, your forest, Earth, be kind to us. On the brown, black, red, many-formed, firm ground Indra guards, I have stood, unconquered, unstruck, unwounded.
The seer asks the Earth's high and wild places, her hills, snowy peaks and forest, to be kind and good to live beside. Then he names her soil by its colours: brown, black, red, and every other form. She is firm and does not shift, and Indra, the warrior god of storm and rain, keeps guard over her. On that ground the speaker says he has stood unconquered, unstruck, unwounded. He names three kinds of harm, and none of them has reached him.
A child stands on its mother's lap, both her hands at its waist. It looks out over the room as if it owned it, and nothing can knock it down. The speaker stands on the Earth the same way. He is upright and unhurt, and his own balance is not what keeps him there. The ground beneath him holds still and holds him.
