Five Peoples, One Mother

Atharva Veda 12.1.15

Meaning · English

Born of you, mortals move on you. You bear the two-footed and four-footed. Yours, Earth, are these five peoples, for whom the rising sun spreads undying light with its rays.

Every mortal comes out of the earth, then spends a life walking across her. She carries those on two feet and those on four, people and cattle alike, with no difference in the carrying. The five peoples belong to her. Older interpreters take these as the four social orders plus the forest dwellers; others take them as the five tribes of early Vedic India. Either way, the phrase names all humankind. The closing line looks up: each morning the rising sun pours undying light on these same short-lived creatures.

Picture a small child asleep on the lap of the mother who gave birth to her. The body that made the child is now the place where she rests. The earth is both of these at once for every creature. She is the source each one came from, and she is also the floor each one walks on.
