When the Small Self Wears Away

Shiva Sutras 3.41

Meaning · English

For one whose knowing has climbed onto that, as that wears down, the limited living being wears away completely.

Take the words one at a time. Arudha means climbed onto, as one climbs onto a roof and stands there. Pramiti is knowing that has become firm, not a passing thought. Tat is simply that: the state the earlier sutras have been pointing to. Jiva is the limited living being, the one who feels he is only this body, this breath, this name. Samkshaya is a thorough wearing away, and kshaya, the wearing down, comes just before it. So the sutra reads in order. The knowing has climbed onto that state. The second tat is the limiting mala, the rooted sense of being a small self. As that mala wears down while the knowing stays mounted, the jiva wears away entirely. The sutra says the small self does not need to be attacked. It thins as the knowing stays where it has climbed. The teaching sits in the anava way, the way of the limited individual, the way of concentrated practice, and it rests on the sutras before it, which have been tracing how the limited self is held in place. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes it as the end of the limited self-sense in one established in that knowing. Bhaskara's Varttika goes further: the jiva rests and the body falls. It then raises the objection that no yogi is seen to end this way, and says Shiva answers it next.

A shirt stiff with starch is washed again and again. The cloth stays whole. Only the stiffness goes, a little each wash, until it hangs soft. The jiva is the stiffness, held in a shape. The cloth is what remains when the shape has worn away.

1. Once today, at a quiet moment, notice the thought 'I am only this, with this name and this body.' Do not argue with it. Just see that it is a thought. 2. Watch where it feels tightest: hurry, being criticised, being ignored. Name that place to yourself. 3. Tonight, sit for three minutes before sleep and follow your breath going out and coming in, with nothing to fix. 4. Notice whether the sense of 'only this' is any looser than in the morning. Simply notice. Nothing is expected.
