Wearing the Elements Lightly
Shiva Sutras 3.42
Meaning · English
Then the freed one, clothed in the elements like a coat, is nearly equal to the Lord, and beyond.
The sutra has four parts. Bhuta means the elements, the material stuff the body is made of. Kancuka means a coat or jacket, something worn over a person. Vimukta means freed, let go. Pati means the Lord, Shiva, the master of all things. Para means beyond, complete. Tada, 'then', points back to the moment of 3.41, when the small self has worn away and the breath of the body is ending. The sutra says the freed one still has the elements around him, but only as a coat. The coat is on him. It is not him. In this way he is almost equal to Shiva, and complete in himself. The teaching rests on 3.41: once the sense of being a small separate self has gone, the body no longer owns anyone. This belongs to the anava way, the path of effort through breath and body, since the body and its end are the ground it speaks from. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as far as the commentators agree, reads the freed one as one who has taken on the nature of Shiva. Bhaskara's Varttika reads 'nearly equal' as 'mostly equal', and adds that the coat of elements does not fall away at once, even then.
A man comes in from the rain and hangs his wet coat on a hook. The coat still drips and still has its weight, but he stands in the warm room and no longer carries it. The body is the coat. The freed one is the man standing beside it.
1. Tonight, when you take off your coat or jacket, stop for three breaths with it in your hand. 2. Notice that you put it on and can take it off. Then notice your body: its weight, its tiredness, its warmth. 3. Ask quietly which parts of this are worn and which part is the one wearing them. Do not hunt for an answer. Just let the question stay for a minute. 4. Do this once a day for a week, at the same moment.
