Breath Belongs to Nature
Shiva Sutras 3.43
Meaning · English
The bond with the breath belongs to its own nature.
Three words carry this sutra. Nisarga means one's own nature, what is there from the start and not added later. Prana is the breath, the going out and coming in that keeps a body alive. Sambandha is a bond, a joining. So the sutra says that the tie between awareness and breath is inborn. Samvit, awareness, is the one it speaks of. It is not a chain put on from outside. Shiva teaches this straight after the two sutras on the liberated one. Having said that such a person wears the body's elements like a jacket and stands equal to the Lord, he adds that breath still goes on. This does not contradict the freedom. Bhaskara's Varttika says awareness, free by its own nature, takes on narrowness because it wishes to show the world in all its variety. Breath is where that narrowing shows most plainly, drawing time in and out. Bhaskara adds that someone who rests in the inner awareness while the bond with breath stays is already beyond the ordinary. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, is understood to read the bond as natural to awareness and not a fault to be thrown off. The sutra belongs to anava upaya, the way that works through small means such as the breath. Shambhava needs no means at all, and shakta works through thought, so the breath here is a doorway and not an obstacle.
A flame in a quiet room leans and steadies with every small movement of the air. Nobody calls the air its jailer. The flame is lit in air from the first moment. In the same way, awareness is joined with breath from its own nature.
1. Once today, for three minutes, sit anywhere and watch the breath going out and coming in. Leave it as it is. 2. Notice the small turn at the end of the out-breath, before the next one begins. 3. Later, in some ordinary task such as washing a cup or walking to a door, notice that the breath is moving without your asking. See whether that noticing can sit beside the task.
