Gathering Into the Middle

Meaning · English
By holding attention on the middle within the nose, what more is there to say of the left, right and central channels?
Four words carry the sutra. Nasika is the nose, taken as the place where the life-force moves, and it moves crookedly, first to one side and then the other. Madhya is the middle. Antar is within. Samyama is holding attention on one thing until it gathers and stays. The channels are nadi: savya is the left, apasavya the right, sushumna the central one. The plain sense: attention held on the middle inside the nose leaves nothing to say about the three channels. The question is a shrug. Shiva does not map them, because the middle already covers them. Why teach it here? The sutra before it says the tie between self and breath is natural. If the tie is natural, nothing has to be built. The student starts from the breath already moving. That makes this anava upaya, the way that uses a small support, as against shambhava, which needs no support, and shakta, which works through thought. Here the support is the breath at the nose. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the middle as more than a spot. It is the inmost awareness that stands beyond the world and is the wall on which the world is painted. It reads the sutra as Shiva's closing word on the fruit of yoga, a fruit the yogi knows in every state without a gap.
1. Sit with the spine easy and the eyes closed or half closed. 2. Let the breath come and go without shaping it. 3. Rest attention inside the nose, at the middle between left and right. 4. When the mind wanders, notice that it has, and return to the middle. 5. Leave the left and right alone. Do not trace any channel. 6. When the time ends, release the attention and sit a moment longer.
