The Closing Once More

Shiva Sutras 3.45

Meaning · English

Again, there may be a closing of the eyes, a folding back.

Three words carry this sutra. Bhuyah means again, once more. Pratimilana joins prati, back or toward, with milana, the shutting of the eyes. Syat means it may be, it would be. So the sutra says: again there would be a closing, a folding back. The word again matters. The sutra assumes a closing has already happened, and says it can happen once more. In Shiva's teaching, the eyes opening onto the world and the eyes closing back into the self are two movements of one awareness, and this sutra names the second. It follows from the two sutras before it, which tie the breath to the self and send attention into the inner middle of the nostrils. It belongs to anava upaya, the way of the small, individual person, who works through breath and focused attention, not through a sudden leap (shambhava) or through thought and conviction (shakta). Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the closing as the liberated one's return inward, where the outer opening of the world folds back into the self. Bhaskara's Varttika puts the stress differently. For him the shiva-nature is nothing new. It is the yogi's own, and a wavering mind keeps him from seeing it unaided. He says it shows itself again by the steps already taught.

1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, and let your eyes close. 2. Rest your attention on the breath at the inner middle of the nostrils, where it passes in and out. 3. When the breath has gone out and the mind has opened toward sounds or thoughts, notice that it has opened. 4. Close again, gently, as the eyelids do, and fold the attention back to the breath. 5. Repeat each time the mind goes out. 6. When the time is over, stop and open your eyes slowly.
