Meaning · English
Rice cooked in milk and jaggery, ghee, sesame-flour cakes, fried cakes, sweet dumplings, wheat sweets, curd and lentil soup: whoever has the means should prepare these as food offered to the Lord. Oil for the body, a rubbing powder, a mirror, a twig for the teeth, a bath, then food, song and dance and the like: these belong to festival days, and may be done daily as well.
The word naivedya means food presented, from a root for making something known or placing it before someone. The verse lists the dishes of a good feast: milk-rice sweetened with jaggery, ghee, cakes of sesame and rice flour, dumplings, curd, soup. Krishna says to prepare them if one has the means. The sweetness of the list matters. Worship here uses the best of what a household actually eats, not a special food. The second half moves from the table to the body. Abhyanga is oil rubbed into the skin, and with it come a scrub powder, a mirror, a twig for cleaning teeth and a bath. These are the acts of caring for a guest or a king, done for Krishna's image. Then come meals, singing and dancing. The word parvan, a joint or knot in the calendar, means a festival day. Krishna names festivals first and then adds that all of it may be done every day. The question behind the list is how a person who loves Krishna can serve him with ordinary life. His answer is that worship should look like the best of a home: good food, clean bodies, music and shared joy. The condition is means. Nothing is asked beyond what a household can bear.
A child at a birthday carries the first slice of cake to her grandmother before anyone else eats. The cake is the same cake. Offering the first portion turns it from a snack into a gift, and the meal into a celebration.
1. Pick one thing you will cook or eat today, however plain: rice, a bowl of dal, a sweet. 2. Before eating, set a small spoonful on a clean plate near a picture, a lamp or a window. Stand quietly for the length of three breaths. 3. Then eat, and share a little with someone at home. 4. On a festival day, add a song, sung or played, before the meal.
A young father stands in a small kitchen at six on the morning of a harvest festival. Money is tight this month. He stirs a little rice and jaggery in milk, sets a spoonful aside for the household shrine, then wakes his daughter with the smell of it. The verse changes that moment in steps. It tells him to cook what he can afford, not the full list. It lets the first portion go to Krishna, which slows his hurry. It puts food, song and a washed, oiled body together, so the day is marked with the senses and with company, not only with worry. Ordinary experience confirms that shared food and music make a day feel different from the days around it. Nutrition adds a caution: ghee, jaggery and fried cakes are rich in fat and sugar, and a doctor would call them festival food, not daily bulk. Washing and cleaning the teeth are sound habits. The verse does not pay the rent, ease the month's worry, or replace a doctor for anyone with diabetes or heart trouble.
