Meaning · English

My devotee should adorn me with love, in whatever way is fitting: with cloth, the sacred thread, ornaments, leaf-garlands, flower garlands, fragrances and sandal paste. With faith, the worshipper should offer me water for the feet, water for sipping, fragrance, flowers, unbroken grains of rice, incense, lamps, and the other offerings.

Krishna tells Uddhava how the worshipper dresses and serves the image. The first half is about adorning. Cloth, sacred thread, jewels, garlands of leaves and flowers, scents and pastes are what one gives to someone dear. The second half lists the offerings in order: water for the feet, water for sipping, fragrance, flowers, whole rice grains, incense, lamps and food. Each is a small courtesy. Rice that is unbroken is a gift that is whole. Three words carry the teaching. Saprema means with love: sa is 'with', prema is love. Shraddha means faith or trust, the heart (shrad) set (dha) on something. Yathocitam means as is fitting, according to the occasion and one's means. Krishna names the objects, but he puts love, faith and fitness beside them. They tell the worshipper how to give. This comes after long instructions on bathing and arranging the worship. Krishna is answering what the worshipper actually does once the image is ready. He gives the same acts, now with the right inner attitude. Uddhava is asked to offer what is fitting, with love and with trust, and not to measure the offering by its cost.

A child gives a parent a drawing, the lines crooked and the colours uneven. The parent keeps it for years. The worth lies in the child's full attention while making it. The offerings work the same way: the plain objects matter less than the love and trust that hand them over.

1. Tonight, at a quiet moment, set a small lamp or candle, one flower or leaf, and a cup of clean water in front of a picture or any place you hold dear. 2. Offer them one at a time. Say to yourself what each is: water, a flower, light. 3. Stay for two minutes after the last one, without hurrying to the next task. 4. Notice whether the giving felt different when you gave slowly, with your full attention.

A woman opens the door at eleven at night. Her sister has come off a long train journey, tired and a little embarrassed to arrive so late. Before any questions, the woman brings water to drink and a bowl so her sister can wash her feet and face. She puts out a clean towel and a light in the room. Her sister's shoulders drop. Nothing grand was given. Each small act said that she was expected and wanted. Krishna's list follows the same order: water for the feet, water to sip, fragrance, flowers, light, food. The verse says these gestures are for the one who is loved, and the sequence carries the welcome. Ordinary experience confirms that small, careful attentions make a person feel known more than large gifts given carelessly. The verse promises nothing about the sister's troubles. It does not settle the argument that may wait in the morning or ease anything that weighs on her. It says only how to receive someone with love, using what is at hand.
