Meaning · English
With water made fragrant by sandalwood, vetiver root, camphor, saffron and aloewood, one should bathe the image every day, as far as one's means allow. The bathing goes with mantras: the Svarnagharma anuvaka, the Mahapurusha vidya, the Purusha hymn, and the Saman chants such as the Rajana and others.
Krishna is describing the bath given to the image of him. The water is scented with five things: sandalwood, vetiver root, camphor, saffron and aloewood. Each is a cooling or sweet-smelling substance, the kind offered to an honoured guest. Then comes a phrase that carries the whole spirit of the teaching, nityada vibhave sati. Nityada means every day, not only on festivals. Vibhava means one's means, one's resources. Daily, and within what one has. The commentators take this to mean the offering is measured to the worshipper's own means, not set at a fixed price. The second half names what is spoken while the water is poured: the Svarnagharma anuvaka, the Mahapurusha vidya, the Purusha hymn, and Saman chants such as the Rajana. A mantra here is a set of words held in the mind while the hands work, so that the washing is an address and not just a rinse. Why is this taught here? Uddhava asked how to worship, and Krishna answers step by step. After the seat and the attendants have been set, the bath is the first full act of welcome. What Krishna asks of the listener is regularity and honesty about means: a little water, daily, with words, counts as the same act as the grand version.
A guest comes in after a long road, and the host pours water over their hands, then offers a cool drink and a clean towel before any talk begins. The daily bath of the image is that welcome. The scents and the hymns are the host's care, said aloud.
1. Tomorrow morning, take a small cup of clean water and, if you have it, add a drop of any scent already in your home, such as rosewater or a pinch of sandal powder. 2. Pour it slowly over a small image, a leaf, or your own hands while saying one line you know by heart. 3. Take about two minutes. Notice how your pace changes when the pouring is slow. 4. Do the same tomorrow, with what you have.
Picture a woman in a rented flat, the morning after a bad night with her sick father. She has no money for ceremony. All she has is a steel cup, a tap and a pinch of sandal paste left in a tin. The teaching speaks to that moment in three steps. First, it asks only for what is within means, so nothing is out of reach. Second, it makes the act daily, so it becomes a fixed point in a shaky morning. Third, it joins water, scent and spoken words, so hands, nose and voice all do the same small thing together. Ordinary experience bears out that slow, repeated, tangible acts steady a worried person, and that warm water and a pleasant smell settle the body. The limit is plain: the bath does not cure her father or lift her fear. It gives the morning a shape and a direction, and sickness still needs the doctor.
