Meaning · English
Let the worshipper honor the discus Sudarshana, the conch Panchajanya, the mace, sword, arrow, bow and plough, the pestle, the Kaustubha jewel, the garland and the Shrivatsa mark. Let him honor Nanda, Sunanda, Garuda, Prachanda and Chanda, Mahabala and Bala, Kumuda and Kumudekshana. Let him honor Durga, Vinayaka, Vyasa and Vishvaksena, the teachers and the gods. Each stands in his own place, turned toward the Lord, and each is worshipped with a sprinkling of water and the other offerings.
Krishna is describing the full worship of the Lord in an image, and here he fills in the company around the seat. First come his weapons and ornaments: the discus, conch, mace, sword, arrow, bow, plough and pestle, then the Kaustubha jewel, the forest garland and the Shrivatsa, the curl of hair on his chest. Next come his attendants, nine names beginning with Nanda and Sunanda, and Garuda, the eagle he rides. Last come Durga, Vinayaka, Vyasa, Vishvaksena, the teachers (guru) and the gods (sura). Three words carry the teaching. Puja is honoring, reverent attention given to someone present. Sthana is a place; Krishna says each one has his own, so the circle around the Lord has an order. Abhimukha is facing toward, from abhi (toward) and mukha (face). Everyone in the circle looks at the Lord, and none looks away. Prokshana is the sprinkling of water, from the sense of scattering drops, and it is the simplest of the offerings. The question behind this is what it means to receive a great guest. Krishna's answer is that the guest comes with his household, and honoring him includes honoring what belongs to him. Nothing here is a rival to him. The teachers and the gods are honored because they turn toward him too. The worshipper is asked to make room for all of them, give each a place, and offer to each with water.
When an honored guest arrives at a house, the host does not greet him alone. He also greets the people who came with him and shows each one a seat. Honoring the Lord works the same way: his weapons, companions and teachers are welcomed around him, each in a place, all facing him.
1. This evening, light one small lamp in front of a picture of Krishna, or on a clean shelf, and set one flower beside it. 2. Dip your fingertips in a bowl of clean water and sprinkle a few drops toward the picture, once. 3. Think of one teacher or elder who has helped you. Bow to them in your mind and give them a place beside the lamp. 4. Stand still for one minute and notice that everything on the shelf is turned the same way.
A father is arranging the family shelf the evening before his daughter's wedding. His mind is racing with caterers, cash and guest lists, and his hands keep dropping things. The verse gives him a task with an order. He sets out the lamp, then the bowl, then the flower, and gives each one its place. He names an elder who is no longer alive and puts a flower where that elder would stand. He sprinkles the water last. Each small act asks for one thing at a time, and ordinary experience confirms that a known sequence done slowly settles a restless head. Placing people and things in order also reminds him that he is not carrying the day alone: teachers, ancestors and the Lord are already standing around him, as the text teaches. The verse does not promise that the wedding will go smoothly, and it does not ease a pounding heart or sleepless nights. If the worry feels larger than the evening, a doctor is the right person to ask.
