He should prepare the offerings of welcome: water for the feet, the respectful gift of water, water for the mouth, and the rest. Having made ready a seat for me, built of dharma and the other powers, nine in all, he should set upon it a lotus of eight petals, bright with its centre and its fine filaments. He should worship me by both ways together, the Vedic and the Tantric, so that both purposes are fulfilled.
Three words carry the teaching. Upachara means the acts of attendance, from upa, near, and char, to move: the small courtesies done for an honoured guest. Asana is a seat, from as, to sit. Padma is the lotus, here with eight petals, a whorl in the middle and filaments around it. Krishna tells Uddhava to treat the Lord as a guest who has arrived. First comes the welcome: water for washing the feet, water offered in respect, water for rinsing the mouth. Then a place for him to sit. That seat is made of dharma and eight more powers, nine in all. The verse does not list them. Over the seat goes a lotus of eight petals, with a bright centre and fine threads around it. Then Krishna names the two streams of rules to follow: the Vedic and the Tantric. They are used together, and the aim is that both purposes are fulfilled. Sridhara Svami reads this as permission to use the two methods side by side. The commentators differ on exactly which two purposes are meant. Why teach this here? Uddhava has been given the steps for sanctifying vessels and calling the presence into the image. Now the worshipper needs to know how to receive that presence. Krishna answers with hospitality: welcome first, then a seat, then the lotus as the place where the worship is centred.
Before a dear guest arrives, a host wipes the floor, spreads a clean cloth, sets out a glass of water and puts one flower in the middle of the table. Nothing is said yet, but the whole room already tells the guest he is expected. The lotus seat is that prepared table, made ready for the Lord.
1. This evening, draw a circle on a sheet of paper with a pencil. Add eight petals around it and a dot in the middle. It takes two minutes. 2. Set the paper on a clean shelf or table. Place a small lamp or one flower on the centre. 3. Pour a little water into a cup and put it beside the paper, as water offered to a guest on arrival. 4. Stand or sit for one minute. Say one plain word of welcome in your own language. Notice how your hands slow down as you do each step.
A young man comes home from a quarrel with his brother, shoulders tight, phone still in his hand. His mother's small shrine is in the corner. He washes his hands, wipes the shelf, lays a cloth, fills a cup with water and puts a flower down. By the time he sits, the quarrel is no longer the only thing in the room. The verse asks for exactly this kind of ordered preparation. Each act is small and has a set place in the sequence. The hands have work to do, and the mind has something to follow other than its own noise. A drawn shape with a centre gives the eye somewhere to rest. Ordinary experience confirms that doing small tasks in a fixed order steadies a restless mind. The verse itself speaks of welcoming the Lord, and that belongs to the tradition's teaching. The nine powers of the seat and the two streams of rules, Vedic and Tantric, have no counterpart in everyday habit, and they are not explained away here. What it does not promise is that the quarrel is settled. The brothers still have to speak, and a calmer start does not replace that conversation.
