In the body cleansed by air and fire, Krishna says, one meditates on his highest presence as a tiny spark of life in the heart-lotus, a spark the perfected have contemplated at the end of the sound. Filled with that spark, which has become one's own self, one worships it throughout the body and becomes absorbed in it. Then one invites him into the image and the other seats of worship, places the sacred touches on the limbs, and worships him fully.

Three words carry the teaching. Jivakala is the spark of life: jiva, the living being, and kala, a small part or fraction. Krishna calls it his own highest form, and says it is tiny, anvi, and sits in the heart as in a lotus. Nyasa, the placing of the limbs, comes from the root as, to place: the worshipper touches parts of the body and sets the divine presence there. Avahana, the invitation, comes from vah, to carry or call toward: one asks the Lord to come. The order of the clauses is the order of the rite. First the body is cleansed, and the commentators take the air and fire as an inner rite done in the mind. Then the worshipper pictures the small spark in the heart, the one the perfected have long contemplated at the end of the sound. Then that presence spreads through the whole body, and the worshipper worships it there and becomes absorbed in it. Only after this is the Lord called into the image or other seat of worship, with the limbs touched and set, and worshipped. Krishna teaches it in this order for a reason. The worshipper first finds the Lord within, so that the outer worship is the offering of someone already filled with him.

Before lighting the big lamp in the shrine, a woman carries a small flame in cupped hands from the kitchen stove, shielding it with her palm. The flame in her hands is the spark in the heart, and the shrine lamp is the image that receives what she has carried.

1. Tonight, before you light a lamp or place a flower, sit for one minute and breathe slowly. 2. Picture one small steady flame in the middle of your chest. Let it be very small. 3. Rest your hand lightly over your heart for a few breaths, as if sheltering it. 4. Then light the lamp or set the flower down, and say quietly, "Please be here." 5. Notice whether your hands move differently from usual.

A mother stands in a hospital corridor outside her son's room, an hour after his surgery. Her hands shake. She has to walk in and be steady for him. She stops at the door and breathes out slowly, once, twice. She puts a hand on her chest and feels the beat there. She lets her attention go from her racing thoughts to that one small, warm place. When she goes in, her voice is lower and her hands are less hurried. Ordinary experience agrees that slow breath and attention on the body settle a frightened person enough to act well. The text gives this a purpose. Krishna teaches that the presence being found in the heart is his own, and that worship begins from there, with the outer offering coming second. The verse does not promise that her son recovers, and it takes away neither her fear nor the need for the doctors. The text's claim is smaller. It offers a place to stand before she walks through the door.
