Krishna tells Uddhava: With that water, sprinkle the place of worship, the materials, and yourself. Then sprinkle the three vessels with water, and make them ready with the things proper to each. The worshipper who knows the method sets out three vessels, for water for the feet, water of respectful welcome, and water for sipping. He then consecrates them with the heart, the head, the tuft of hair, and the Gayatri.
Krishna is still speaking to Uddhava about the preparation before worship, and here the water from the earlier steps goes to work. He sprinkles three things: the place, the offerings, and the worshipper himself. Nothing is left out of the cleansing, including the one who offers. Then come three vessels. Pada is the foot, so the first holds water to wash the guest's feet. Arghya is the water of honored welcome, offered to someone who is revered. Acamaniya is water for sipping and rinsing the mouth. These are the same courtesies a good host gives a guest who has walked a long way, and Krishna treats the image as that guest. Each vessel has one purpose and is kept for it. The worshipper is called daishika, one who has been shown the method. Krishna assumes the way is learned from a guide, not invented. Last, he consecrates the vessels with the heart, the head, the tuft of hair and the Gayatri. The commentators read the first three as the short formulas tied to those parts of the body, and the Gayatri is the well-known Vedic verse. The reason is order. Earlier Krishna said water offered with love pleases him. Here he shows how to arrange the offering so that attention is not scattered once the guest is before you. It asks the listener to prepare first and offer afterwards.
A cook lines up small bowls of salt, spice and oil before lighting the stove, each one for its own step. Once the fire is lit, nothing needs hunting for. The three named, prepared vessels are that same readiness: the arranging is finished before the guest arrives, so the offering itself can be unhurried.
1. This evening, before you sit for a few minutes of prayer, sprinkle a few drops of water on the spot where you will sit and on your hands. 2. Set out three small cups or spoons of water. Say quietly what each is for: washing the feet, welcome, sipping. 3. Touch your heart, then your forehead, then the back of your head, saying one name of Krishna each time. 4. Light a lamp, offer the water, and sit quietly for two minutes.
A young man is about to receive his fiancée's parents for the first time. Twenty minutes before the doorbell, he wipes the table, sets out three glasses, and checks that the towel is in the bathroom. His hands are steadier by the end of it than at the start. Krishna's instruction works the same way. First he cleans the place, the things and himself. Then he gives each vessel one job. Then he consecrates them, touching heart, head and tuft, so that body and mind are gathered before the guest comes. When the guest arrives, nothing is left to fumble for, and attention can go to the person. Ordinary experience confirms the small part of this: a task laid out in advance makes the hands calmer and the mind less scattered. The limit is plain. Preparing the table does not decide how the meeting goes, and it does not take away the nervousness of waiting. The text's further claim, that the consecrating formulas make the vessels fit for Krishna, is the tradition's own teaching and is not something this scene tests.
