Clean, with everything gathered, he spreads a seat of darbha grass, its tips toward the east, and sits facing east or north, or else directly before the image. Having placed the sacred syllables on his own body, and likewise on the image of me, he wipes the image with his hand. Then he properly makes ready the water pot and the water for sprinkling.

Krishna begins the steps of image worship with what comes before the first offering. The worshipper is clean. Everything needed is already gathered, so he does not rise midway to fetch it. He lays a seat of darbha grass, a reed-like grass kept for sacred use, and sits facing east or north, or directly facing the image. Three words carry the rest. Shuci means pure, a clean body and a settled mind. Nyasa comes from a root meaning to set down. It is the placing of mantra syllables on the limbs, first the worshipper's own, then the image's. The commentators read it as making body and image fit for the worship ahead. Kalasa is the water pot, and prokshaniya is the water for sprinkling, from a root meaning to sprinkle. So the clauses run in order. Be clean. Gather the things. Fix the seat and the direction. Sit. Set the mantra on yourself and on the image. Wipe the image with the hand, a gentle touch before any offering. Prepare the pot and the water, because later steps will sprinkle the place, the things and the worshipper. Krishna teaches this because worship is a meeting, and a meeting goes better when the host is ready. He asks the listener to give the beginning the same care as the offering.

A cook does not light the stove first. She washes her hands, sets the board, the knife and the bowls within reach, and only then begins. The seat, the gathered things and the water pot are that setting out. The meal is the worship itself.

1. Tonight or tomorrow morning, wash your hands and face before you sit to pray or light a lamp. 2. Gather what you will use first: the lamp, a match, one flower, a small cup of water. Put them within reach. 3. Lay a folded cloth or mat on a clear patch of floor and sit facing east or north, or facing your image. 4. Sit one quiet minute before you begin. Notice whether you still need to get up for anything.

A young mother wakes at five with the baby finally asleep. She wants two minutes of prayer, but the room is cluttered, her hands smell of milk, and the lamp oil is in another room. By the time she finds everything, the two minutes are gone and she feels worse. The verse changes this moment in small steps. She washes her hands. She sets the lamp, a match, a flower and a cup of water on a tray the night before. She spreads a cloth in one corner and sits facing the same direction each day. When she sits, nothing is missing, and the place itself says that this is the time for prayer. She does not spend her first minute on errands and her second on regret. Ordinary experience confirms that a ready place makes starting easier, and that a fixed spot and fixed order let the mind settle sooner. The verse does not promise a calm mind, and it does not give the baby a better night. It only removes the small obstacles that keep a person from beginning.
