For the sun, the dearest homage is the offering made to it; for water, it is water and the like. Even plain water, brought in faith by a devotee of mine, is dear to me. But abundant offerings brought by one without devotion do not bring me satisfaction. If so, what need be said of perfume, incense, flowers, a lamp and cooked food offered that way?

Krishna has been telling Uddhava where to worship him and with what: in an image, in fire, in the sun, in water. Here he says what matters in all of it. Two words carry the verse. Shraddha is faith, from shrat, heart or trust, and dha, to place: it is placing the heart on something. Bhakta is a devotee, from bhaj, to share in. Its opposite, abhakta, is one who gives without any sharing of heart. The first clause matches the offering to the place. The sun is honoured with a raised offering of water, and water is honoured with water and similar things. Then Krishna turns to the point. A devotee's plain water, brought with faith, is dear to him. A large heap of gifts from someone with no devotion does not satisfy him. Then comes a question that leaves the answer unsaid: if abundance fails without devotion, what of perfume, incense, flowers, a lamp and food? The commentators read it mainly as a rebuke to showy worship. Sridhara Svami takes the closing question this way, as pressing the point about offerings made without devotion. Krishna says this after pages of procedure so that Uddhava does not mistake the steps for the worship itself. The steps hold the heart. They cannot stand in for it. He asks Uddhava to give what he can, and to give it with his heart in it.

A child brings her mother a handful of crushed roadside flowers, held tight in a warm fist, and the mother treasures it. A stranger could send a florist's bouquet and mean nothing by it. The flowers matter less than the hand that carried them. In the verse, faith is the carrying hand.

1. Tonight, pour a small glass of clean water and set it near where you sit, by a window, a shelf or a picture of Krishna. 2. Hold it in both hands for a few breaths and say, in your own words, that you are offering it to him. 3. Leave it there for a minute, then drink it or pour it on a plant. 4. Notice whether your attention was on the water or on something else. Do this once a day for a week, and keep it as small as it is.

Take a woman on the morning of a family festival. Her husband lost his job last month, the kitchen is nearly bare, and she is ashamed that the offering at the small shrine will be a glass of water and nothing else. She keeps thinking of the grand spread her sister-in-law lays out every year. The verse gives her something specific. Krishna tells Uddhava that water offered in faith is dear to him, and that a pile of gifts without devotion does not please him. So she can set the glass down slowly, stand a moment, and say what she means. The shame about what is missing gets less room, because the teaching puts the weight on the giving, not on the amount. She can then go back to cooking with her mind a little quieter. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a gift handed over in a hurry feels thin to both giver and receiver, and a small one given with attention feels full. The verse does not promise that the money problem eases, or that the festival will look any richer. It speaks only about how an offering is received in the tradition's own understanding. A family in real hardship still needs real help, from relatives, neighbours or an employment office.
