Krishna tells Uddhava: Worship of me in images and the rest is done with the well-known offerings, by one without guile. For the devotee it is done with whatever has come to hand, and in the heart with feeling alone. In the image, bathing and adorning are dearest to me. On the altar of earth, the laying down of the principles. In the fire, an offering soaked in ghee.

Three words carry it. Amayin means without maya, without trickery: the worshipper is not putting on a show. Bhava is the inner feeling, the state of the heart that gives the act its meaning. Tattva-vinyasa is the laying out of the tattvas, the principles the world is made of, set down in order on the cleared ground of the altar. Krishna says the well-known offerings, the usual ones, are used when worshipping an image, so long as the worshipper is honest. A devotee with little uses what has been got, whatever is at hand. In the heart, feeling alone is enough, because the heart needs no objects. Then he fits the act to the place. For an image, he says, bathing and dressing it are dearest, since an image has a form to care for. On a bare altar, the ordered placing of the principles is the act, because there is no form to dress. In a fire, the offering is made with ghee, which feeds the flame. The commentators read the offering in each place as a different way of giving the same devotion. The teaching answers a practical worry: how can anyone worship rightly with so many places and so many rules? Krishna's answer is that each place has its own natural gift, and honesty and feeling matter most. It asks the listener to give what suits the place, truthfully, and with what is within reach.

A mother bathes and dresses her small child, but sits and talks with her grown son over tea. The love is the same, and the act changes with who is in front of her. In the same way, one devotion takes the form of bathing and dressing for an image, ordered laying-down on an altar, and ghee in a fire.

1. This evening, before eating, pick one place for a small offering: a shelf, a windowsill, or a picture of Krishna. 2. Give it one thing that suits it. For a picture, wipe the frame and set a flower or leaf beside it. For a lamp, light it and let it burn for a minute. 3. Use only what is already in the house, and do it without hurry. 4. Stand quietly for one minute and notice whether your attention rests on what you are doing.

A young man has just moved to a hostel room in a new city. His mother's brass lamp, her flowers and her pooja shelf are all at home, and he feels he has nothing proper to offer, so he offers nothing for weeks. One night he picks a small saucer from the shared kitchen, puts a little oil in it, and lights a wick made from cotton. He sets it on the windowsill and stands there for a minute. The verse would change the moment in three steps. The missing brass lamp stops being the problem. The offering is fitted to the place he actually has, which is a sill and a saucer. And the minute is given honestly, with attention on the flame instead of on how it looks. Ordinary experience confirms that a small act done with full attention steadies a restless mind more than a grand one done half-heartedly. The verse does not promise that homesickness will lift, or that the room will feel like home. It also does not replace company or a doctor if low mood is heavy and lasts.
