The image is remembered as eight-fold: of stone, of wood, of metal, of clay or paste, painted, made of sand, made in the mind, and made of jewels. Its installation is of two kinds, the movable and the fixed, and it is a house for the living. With a fixed image, Uddhava, there is no calling down and no sending away. With a movable one, either may be done as the worshipper chooses. On a prepared patch of ground both are done. An image not made of paste is bathed. For the others, it is wiped clean.
Krishna first lists the materials an image may be made of. Pratima is the image. Stone, wood, metal, clay, a painting, a figure in sand, a jewel: all are allowed, and so is one made only in the mind. The list ranges from the costly to the free, so no one is shut out for lack of means. Then he names two kinds of pratishtha, the establishing of an image: the movable and the fixed. He calls the image a house for the living. It is a place where the worshipper meets the one being worshipped, and Krishna does not treat it as an object to admire. The rest is about two small acts. Avahana is inviting the presence in. Udvasa is respectfully seeing it off. A fixed image already stands established, so neither is done. With a movable one, they are optional. On a cleared patch of ground, sthandila, which is made fresh for each worship and then given up, both are done, because nothing remains there afterward. Last comes cleaning. An image that can take water is bathed. One made of paste or drawn in colour would be spoiled by water, so it is wiped. The commentators read this as plain care for the material. Krishna is answering how a person actually does this, and the answer is that the form follows what the image is and where it stands. He asks the listener to match the rites to the image in front of them and not to copy one fixed routine.
A guest who is staying only for the evening is welcomed at the door and seen off at the end. Someone who lives in the house is not greeted at the door each morning. The movable image is the guest, the fixed image is the resident, and the rites of welcome and farewell follow that difference.
1. Choose whatever image you already have at home: a small picture, a stone, a figure on a shelf, or simply a clear picture held in the mind. 2. Clean it for a moment: wipe the frame, dust the stone, or sweep the spot where it sits. Use water only if the material can take it. 3. If the image is one you move, say a short welcome when you set it out and a short farewell when you put it away. If it stays in place, skip both. 4. Sit one minute and notice how care for the object settles your attention.
A young woman has just moved to a rented room in a new city. She owns almost nothing, only a small printed picture her mother pressed into her bag. She props it against the wall and wonders whether it counts for anything beside the shrines she grew up around. Krishna's list answers her. Stone, metal, paint, sand or a picture held in the mind are all named as images, so the cost of the thing does not decide whether the act is real. She wipes the dust from the frame, which is the care this verse asks for an image that cannot take water. She decides it will stay where it is, so no greeting or farewell is needed. If she propped it up only for an evening prayer, she could welcome and dismiss it each time. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a tidied corner and a repeated gesture help a restless mind settle in an unfamiliar place. The verse does not promise that loneliness lifts or that the new city becomes home. It speaks only of how the image is kept and cared for.
