Meaning · English
First let him bathe, his teeth cleaned, to purify the body. Let the bath be taken with mantras on both sides, with clay lifted from the earth and the other customary things. Then the twilight prayers and the rest of the duties the Veda lays down for me: through these let him shape worship of me rightly, holding a clear resolve. Such worship purifies action.
Four words carry the teaching. Snana is bathing, from a root for washing. It cleans the body so worship begins from a fresh place. Mantra is a sacred phrase, from man, to think, and tra, to guard: words that guard the mind. Sandhya is twilight worship, from the joining of night and day, kept at dawn, noon and dusk. Sankalpa is resolve, the mind naming what it is about to do and for whom. Krishna tells Uddhava where worship starts: with the body. Clean the teeth, then bathe, so the body is clean for the work ahead. The bath is spoken over with mantras, and clay is taken up from the earth as part of the washing. Then come the daily duties the Veda sets out, the twilight prayers first. Krishna says worship of him is to be built from these, with a settled intention in the mind. Worship made this way purifies action itself. Uddhava has asked how Krishna is to be worshipped. Krishna begins at the doorstep, before any image or flame, because the worshipper has to arrive first. The verses ask for washing, the fixed daily duties, and one inward sentence of purpose, so that ordinary acts are offered and not merely done.
A cook wipes the counter, ties back her hair and washes her hands before she touches the flour. Nobody calls that cooking, yet the meal depends on it. The bath, the daily duties and the quiet resolve are that clearing, and they make the worship that follows clean and attentive.
1. Tomorrow morning, brush your teeth and wash before anything else. Don't pick up your phone until you have. 2. As the water runs, say inwardly in one sentence what the day is for and whom it is offered to. 3. Choose one small fixed act, such as lighting a lamp or standing quietly at the window for one minute at dawn or dusk. 4. Notice whether the morning feels more ordered when it begins this way.
A father stands at the sink at five in the morning, the day his daughter leaves for a hostel in another city. His mind is already racing through train times and unsaid things. He brushes his teeth, splashes cold water on his face, and lights the small lamp he lights every day. By then his hands know what to do even though his thoughts do not, and he reaches the day in order. The verse asks for exactly this kind of beginning: wash, keep the fixed duties, and name the purpose before acting. Ordinary experience confirms that a set order of small acts steadies a restless morning. Doctors would add that regular washing and tooth care protect health. Clay as a cleanser is a custom, and ordinary soap and water are what clinics recommend for hands. The text teaches that a bath with mantras and resolve purifies action itself, and that is its own teaching. None of this removes the father's grief at the parting, and it does not stand in for a doctor when the body is ill.
