When a person has reached the twice-born state, as his own Veda declares, let him learn from me how to worship me with devotion and faith. Joined to devotion, the twice-born should honor me with offerings, without deceit, as his own teacher: in the image, on the prepared ground, in the fire, in the sun, in the water, or in the heart.

Two ideas run through these lines. First, dvijatva, being twice-born. The word means a second birth: the person is born once from the mother and born again into the discipline of the Veda. Krishna speaks to someone who has taken up that discipline and now asks how to worship him. Faith and devotion are the conditions he names, shraddha (trust that lets a person begin) and bhakti (loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in). Second, the places. Arca is the image, sthandila the cleared patch of ground, then fire, sun, water and the heart. Each is a place where the Lord can be met, and the list runs from the outermost thing to the innermost. Krishna adds two words that carry the weight. The worshipper gives dravya, an actual offering, and gives it amayaya, without deceit or pretense. Then comes the surprise: he asks to be honored as svaguru, the worshipper's own teacher. The one worshipped is also the one who guides. This answers Uddhava's request for a practice that frees a person from the bondage of action. Krishna begins with the sincerity of the person and the many places the Lord can be found. He asks the listener to bring real devotion and honest offerings, and to let the place suit the moment.

A child hunting for a lost mother looks in the kitchen, the yard and the doorway, then finds her beside the bed. The mother was never missing, only unnoticed. In the same way, the Lord is near in image, fire, sun, water and heart alike, and each place is another doorway to him.

1. Tonight or tomorrow morning, choose one place from the list: a lit lamp, a glass of water, or the morning sun. 2. Bring one small offering of your own, such as a flower, a few drops of water, or a spoken thank you. 3. Stand quietly for one minute and offer it as it is, without pretending to feel more than you do. 4. Notice whether sincerity or show led your offering.

A woman has just moved into a rented flat in a city where she knows nobody. There is no temple nearby and no family to take her. She stands in the empty kitchen at dusk and wonders where she is supposed to pray. Krishna's list answers her. He names fire, water, the sun and the heart, things she can reach tonight. She lights one lamp on the window ledge, pours water into a small cup, and says a few plain words. The place is ordinary, but the act has a beginning and an end, and the evening has some shape in it. Ordinary experience agrees that a small, repeated act in a fixed spot can steady a restless mind and make a strange room feel lived in. The verse does not promise that loneliness lifts or that the new city becomes home. It does not replace company, or a doctor if the heaviness persists. It says the offering can begin where she is standing, and that honesty counts for more than the surroundings.
