Well and Lake

Whatever purpose a well of water serves, when a large lake lies all around in every respect, that much only do all the Vedas serve for the one who realizes the Absolute Truth and stands in complete knowledge.
Three words carry it. Artha is purpose, the use a thing has for you. Udapana is a well, a small drawn source of water. Vijanata is one who knows completely, and the word for that knower, brahmana, names someone who has realized the Absolute Truth, not someone defined by birth. Krishna tells Arjuna that a well serves every need for water, yet when a great lake spreads on all sides, only a small part of the well's purpose is left. In the same way, the Vedas, with their rites and their promised rewards, hold only that much for a person of full knowledge. The reason lies in the verses just before: the Vedas deal with the three modes of nature, with gain and pleasure, and Arjuna is being asked to stand above all that. Whoever has the lake no longer hunts for water. Krishna does not call the well false. It was real water and kept people alive. It is simply small beside what the knower already has. He asks Arjuna to stop treating ritual results as the goal and to aim at the knowledge that makes them small. The commentators weigh it differently. Shankara reads it as saying that every fruit of Vedic rites is contained in the fruit of knowing the Self. Ramanuja holds that the Vedas stay to be followed, as service toward knowing the Lord, without desire for their rewards. Madhva reads the knower as valuing the Vedas for one aim, knowing Vishnu.
A paper map gets you to an unfamiliar town, and you study it closely on the road. Once you stand in the town square, you glance at it only for the little it still tells you. The map is the Vedas, the square is realized knowledge, and the map was never wrong.
1. Pick one rule or routine you follow only to collect a reward, such as a fast kept for credit or a chore done for praise. 2. Today, while doing it, ask quietly what it was meant to lead you toward. 3. Spend five minutes noticing whether that aim is already partly present in you, and write one line about what you find. 4. Keep the routine if it still serves that aim, and let go of the reward-counting part for the day.
A retired schoolteacher steps off a train in the river town she has taught from textbooks for forty years. She has a guidebook in her bag, with its map and its list of sights. Standing on the actual bank, she finds she opens it only to check a name. What she came for is in front of her, and the book has become small beside it. That is the shape of Krishna's teaching here, step by step. The book did its work and was needed to arrive. Its use is now one small part of the moment. She is free to look at the water instead of the page. Ordinary experience agrees that a rule leaned on at first, such as a recipe or a driving lesson, fades once the skill is in the hands. The verse does not say the guidebook was worthless, and it does not promise that she will feel anything special at the river. It does not remove her tiredness from the journey, or any grief she carries there. It speaks only of what a scripture's place is once its purpose has been reached.
