Standing Free of Opposites

Bhagavad Gita 2.45

Meaning · English

The Vedas deal with the three modes of material nature. Rise above those three modes, Arjun. Be free from the pairs of opposites, eternally fixed in truth, unconcerned about gaining and keeping, and settled in the self.

Krishna uses three words that carry the whole verse. Guna means a strand or mode, one of the three qualities that make up material nature and colour every mood and motive. Dvandva means a pair, such as pleasure and pain, heat and cold, win and loss. Yoga-kshema means getting what you lack (yoga) and guarding what you have (kshema). Krishna tells Arjuna that the Vedas mostly speak about the world of the three modes, the world of rites, rewards and results. He asks Arjuna to rise above that world and become free of the pairs that keep tugging the mind. In place of that tugging he asks for a mind fixed in what is true and lasting, and not anxious about acquiring and protecting. The reason sits in the verses just before: a mind chasing pleasure and rank is pulled about and cannot hold one resolve. Only a person anchored in the self stops being tossed by each gain and loss. Shankara reads this as a call to move from ritual toward knowledge of the self. Ramanuja takes the steady state as being firmly set in the sattva quality, free of the restless and dull ones. Madhva stresses that freedom comes through knowing and relying on the Lord, who looks after what is needed.

A pendulum clock swings steadily left and right, and the weight on its rod never stops moving. The small nail in the wall that holds the whole clock does not move at all. The swings are the pairs of gain and loss, and the nail is the self that Krishna asks Arjuna to rest in.

1. Tonight, write down the two or three outcomes you have been worrying about most this week, one line each. 2. Next to each, mark whether it is about getting something or keeping something. 3. Pick one and, for ten minutes, sit with the plain fact that it may go either way, and notice where in your body the grip tightens. 4. Then do the next small task in front of you, whatever it is, and notice that you can do it while the outcome stays open.

A retired schoolteacher stands at the bank counter on the day her fixed deposit matures. The rate board has changed since last year. Her neighbour says one scheme is better, her son says another, and she is afraid of choosing wrong with money that must last her years. Krishna's words change the moment in small steps. She sees that the worry has two faces, wanting more and fearing to lose what she has. She asks the clerk the plain questions, how long the money is locked and what happens if she needs it early. She chooses with what she knows and lets go of the picture of the perfect choice. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind gripping at every swing of a number decides worse than a steady one. The verse does not promise the choice will turn out well, and it does not replace advice from someone who knows the figures. What it offers is a mind that is not carried off by each swing.
