Pleasure Dulls Resolve

Bhagavad Gita 2.44

Meaning · English

For those whose minds cling to gratification and luxury, and whose intellect is bewildered by that clinging, the resolute intellect never arises in fulfilment.

Three terms carry the verse. Bhoga is gratification, the pleasure of having and enjoying. Aishwarya is luxury, the comfort and standing that wealth brings. Buddhi is the intellect, the part of us that decides and holds to a decision. Krishna adds that this intellect has to be vyavasayatmika, resolute and single-pointed. Samadhi here means fulfilment, a mind settled and complete. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who are deeply attached to enjoyment and comfort have their minds carried off by it. Their intellect is bewildered, so it cannot gather itself into one firm decision. Without that, the settled fulfilment never comes. The reason is plain. A mind pulled in many directions by wants cannot hold a single course. Krishna is not calling enjoyment a crime. He says the attachment is what scatters the intellect. The commentators read the settled state a little differently. Shankara takes it as the mind steady in the Self. Ramanuja reads it as the mind fixed on the Lord. Madhva, too, reads it as steadiness in devotion to the Lord.

A compass held next to a magnet. The needle swings toward the nearer pull and never settles on north. A mind attached to pleasure and comfort behaves the same way: the pull close at hand keeps the resolute intellect from pointing steadily at what matters.

1. Tonight, pick one small pleasure you reach for out of habit, such as the phone, a sweet or a purchase. 2. Before you reach for it, wait five minutes and note what the mind is doing: where it jumps, how loud the wanting is. 3. Afterwards, write one sentence about what you had meant to do in those minutes. 4. Repeat for three days and notice whether a decision made earlier holds more firmly.

A man sits on the sofa at eleven at night, thumb over the buy button for a gadget he does not need. Only yesterday he promised himself to save for his daughter's school fees. The wanting is loud, the screen is bright, and the promise feels far away. Krishna's teaching reads this moment step by step. The attachment to comfort is what clouds the intellect, so the earlier decision loses its grip. The clear decision was made when the mind was calm. The bewildered state, as Krishna describes it, is the one that forgets that decision. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, hungry or tempted mind finds resolve harder to hold. Seeing this, the man can notice that the pull is the thing clouding his judgment, not a fresh argument for buying. He can put the phone down and let the wanting pass before he decides anything. The verse does not promise that the wanting will vanish, or that one evening settles the matter. It describes what attachment does to the mind, and it does not replace help for anyone struggling with compulsive spending or other habits.
