Equal in Win and Loss

Bhagavad Gita 2.48

Meaning · English

Steadfast in yog, perform your duties, Arjun, having abandoned attachment. Become equipoised in success and failure. This equanimity is what is called Yog.

Three ideas carry the verse. Sanga is attachment, a clinging to how the work must turn out. Siddhi and asiddhi are success and failure, the two results any task can bring. Samatva is evenness, the mind staying level whichever result arrives. Krishna tells Arjuna to act, and to act from that level place, steadfast in yog. He does not ask him to stop caring about the work or to drop it. The attachment goes, and the duty stays. Then he gives yog a definition: it is not a posture or a rite, it is the evenness itself. The reason sits in the verses just before. If the mind is hooked to the result, every outcome shakes it, and a shaken mind does the work badly. Arjun is about to fight, and he is already trembling over what might follow. So Krishna asks him to do what is his to do, wholly, and let the mind rest in the same place after a win and after a loss. Shankara reads this evenness as a steadiness of mind that prepares one for knowledge, with actions offered to God. Ramanuja reads it as karma yoga, the discipline of action that leads toward realizing the self. Madhva reads it as acting in service of Vishnu, without claiming the result.

A ferryman crosses the same river all day. Some trips the water is calm and some it is rough, and some passengers tip well and some do not. He keeps his hands on the oar and his eyes on the far bank. The oar is the duty. The weather and the tips are the outcomes, and his steadiness belongs to neither.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as a message you must write or a meal you must cook. Before you start, say quietly what a good result would look like and what a poor one would look like. 2. Do the task with full attention, and when your mind jumps ahead to how it will be received, return it to the next small step. 3. When it is finished, sit for one minute and notice whether you feel lifted or sunk by the result. 4. Whatever you notice, let it pass, and begin the next task from the same level place.

A carpenter has finished a wardrobe for a customer and stands by the door waiting for the verdict. His stomach is tight. He has already rehearsed the praise and the complaint, and he cannot tell which he is bracing for. The verse would change this moment in steps. First, he separates the two things that have been tangled: the joinery, which is finished and his, and the customer's face, which is not. Second, he lets the tightness be there without feeding it with imagined replies. Third, whichever words come, he answers them from the same footing, thanking the praise and hearing the complaint as information about the wardrobe, not about his worth. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind pulled hard toward one outcome listens and works worse. The limit is plain. Krishna's teaching does not promise the customer will be pleased, and it does not remove the sting of a harsh word or the worry about the rent. It speaks to the carpenter's footing, not to the verdict.
