Atreya by the Ganga
Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 3.1
The story · English
In Kampilya, the capital of Panchala, a country thick with villages and home to many learned brahmins, lived the sage Punarvasu, the son of Atri. Near the end of the hot month, at the close of summer, he went walking in the woods along the banks of the Ganga, his disciples around him. As they walked, he turned to his disciple Agnivesha and spoke. "My gentle friend," he said, "look at the stars and the planets, the moon and the sun, the air and fire, even the directions of the sky. They are no longer in their natural state. Everywhere there are signs that the seasons are turning against themselves." The others listened under the trees as the river ran beside them.
"Because of this," Punarvasu went on, "the soil will soon stop giving the herbs what they need: their taste, their strength, the change they work inside the body, and their particular power. Without these, a sickness will spread through the land. It is certain. So before the ruin begins, before the earth grows poor, gather the herbs you will need now, while they still hold all of that. We will give them to anyone who comes to us, and to anyone we go to find. If the herbs are gathered well, prepared well and given well, then when the diseases come that empty towns and villages, there will be no need for a great show of treatment."
Agnivesha answered him. "Teacher, let us suppose the herbs have already been found, gathered and given as they should be. My question is this. People differ in their nature, their food, their bodies and strength, in what suits them, in their minds and in their age. How can whole settlements of such different people be struck down at the same time by one disease?" The son of Atri replied, "Agnivesha, however much people differ in those ways, there are other things they hold in common. When those common things go wrong, diseases arise that come at the same time and show the same signs, and they destroy whole settlements. What people share are four: the air, the water, the land, and the season."
"Know that the air has become harmful," he said, "when it goes against the season, when it is far too damp, keeps shifting its direction, cuts too sharp, runs too cold or too hot, or too dry, when it pours out mist without end, roars fearfully, blows from every side with its currents clashing, spins in whirlwinds, and carries a foul smell, or vapour, or sand, dust or smoke. And know that the water has lost its virtue when its smell, colour, taste and feel have turned foul, when it is full of filth, when the water birds have left it, when it has nearly dried up in its bed, and when it is unpleasant to everyone who comes to it."
"The land has turned harmful," he said, "when its colour, smell, taste and feel grow foul, and it fills with snakes, wild beasts, gnats, locusts, flies, mice, owls, and the vultures and jackals that feed on the dead; when tall grass, reeds, bushes and creepers overrun abandoned fields and the crops dry up and are lost; when smoke hangs in the air, birds cry and dogs bark without stopping, and herds and flocks rush in all directions; when towns and villages have given up piety, truth, modesty and good conduct; when the waters are always troubled, meteors and lightning fall and the earth shakes; when dry, copper, red or white clouds hide the sun, moon and stars; when people live in fear, and cries of grief and darkness seem to fill every place."
"As for the season," Punarvasu said, "it is harmful when it shows signs opposite to what belong to it, or signs far stronger or far weaker than they should be. Those with knowledge and experience say that when these four are in such a state, they destroy cities, towns and villages. When they are otherwise, they bring good. Yet even when all four have turned bad, if the people are treated with the right medicines, there is no reason to fear disease." Then came verses on which of the four is stronger. Because each is harder to escape than the last, water is stronger than air, the land stronger than water, and the season strongest of all. And whichever has the easier remedy should be counted the lighter.
Even if all four are spoiled, the verses said, people treated with the right medicines are not likely to fall ill. For those whose death is not bound to a common fate, and whose deeds are not shared with all the rest, the best remedy is the medicine of the five cleansing treatments. In such times, the rejuvenating remedies are highly praised, and so is strengthening the body with the herbs gathered beforehand. And in such times, the means by which people protect themselves are these: speaking the truth, showing compassion to every living creature, giving gifts, making offerings to the gods and worshipping them, doing acts of piety, and keeping the mind at peace. That was the teaching given by the Ganga, before the sickness came.
